Good asphalt paving starts long before the first truck of mix reaches the job. The pavement is a complete structure made up of the prepared subgrade, aggregate base, asphalt courses, drainage, and transitions into the surrounding property. If one part of that system is weak, the finished surface can crack, settle, rut, or hold water even when the asphalt itself looks good on day one.
Tolliver & Curl begins by evaluating how the site drains, where traffic enters and turns, what types of vehicles will use the pavement, and whether the existing materials can support the proposed work. Soft or unstable areas are addressed before paving. The aggregate base is placed and compacted, grades are established, and the asphalt mix is installed in workable lifts so the rollers can build proper density. Joints, edges, utility structures, concrete approaches, and tie-ins are handled as part of the paving plan, not as afterthoughts.
WHY IT MATTERS
Most premature asphalt failures can be traced to water, an inadequate base, poor compaction, or a pavement section that does not match the traffic. Water softens supporting materials and enters open joints and cracks. Heavy trucks place far different demands on pavement than passenger vehicles. Asphalt that cools before it is properly compacted can retain excess air voids, allowing air and moisture to move through the mat and shorten its service life.
